In the 19th century the slope was terraced and 18 heated greenhouses were built to house a vast collection of orchids, camellias, and other tropical plants. In 1852, for the first time in the Austrian Empire, the largest water lily in the world (Victoria amazonica) was brought to bloom here. In the 19th century a park was established on Marian Meadow below the castle's south garden.

In 1932 the castle came into the hands of the Czechoslovak army. The military had the greenhouses taken out and put a presentation grounds and new stables on the lowest terrace. After the Second World War, the grand gardens gave way to garages, workshops, warehouses, and a huge fuel tank. At one point, there was even a pigsty. Much of the garden became a junkyard.

The castle park on Marian Meadow made way for a public swimming pool and a motor camp, both of which were ultimately swept away by the great flood of 2002. The city's attempts to get financing for renovation of the waterlogged complex were unsuccessful. And in 2006 public opinion called for renewal of the original park.
