Since 1957, the regional museum in Decin has had its home across from the main railway station in the former Thun-Hohenstein hunting chateau (circa 1735).

The museum emerged in 1945 as a cultural and educational institution as well as a focal point for local historical research. Over the years it has specialized on the history of Elbe water traffic and has earned international renown for its work. After 1989 its focus on regional history was deepened. It has exhibits dedicated to archeological research into life in medieval Decin, Gothic sculpture in the region, and local ornithology, as well as a gallery and temporary exhibits.

In 1992 a sculpture garden was established in the museum courtyard, grouping works of art, valuable architectural artifacts, and pieces from Decin's public spaces (such as Baroque sculptures of the Virgin Mary Immaculate and Saint Helen from the Church of the Ascension of the Holy Cross, Saint John of Nepomuk from Divci skok near Jakuby, and Ecce homo from Rozbelesy, as well as heraldry and other pieces).
In front of the museum building stands one of the largest Gingko trees in Bohemia, probably planted at the time of the chateau's construction.
The museum also has a permanent exhibit at Decin Castle.
